Sheffield Doc Fest 2013: Jury Duty

Attendance this year was a particularly special experience for me as I had been asked to take part on the AWFJ jury to vote for the best documentary directed by a woman.

Helmrich, Naranjo and Tatsumi

Watching Position Among the Stars was like saying goodbye to some good friends. It is the final part in a trilogy of documentary films following the lives of a family living in Jakarta, Indonesia. Director, Leonard Retel Helmrich followed this family for twelve years; I would recommend getting to know them.

Mexican Director, Gerardo Naranjo delivers some brutal and visceral viewing in Miss Bala.

A film depicting the life of Gekiga Manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Worth a watch.

Girl Model Review and Interview

This is a serious subject for me and a film I felt I had to write about.
Women being exploited makes me feel sick.
Thirteen year old girls being objectified also makes me feel sick.
Girl Model follows Nadya Vall as she starts her modelling career in Japan.

You can read my review of the film over on Filmoria here.

I also sat down with the Directors, David Redmon and Ashley Sabin, to talk about their relationship with Nadya and the modelling scout who introduced them to this troubling world.
You can read my interview here.

Girl model is out in the UK now.
List of screenings here.
